Summer Sewing: Classic Plaid Jacket

All Photographs are self portraits taken by myself.

One of my favorite sewing pattern-makers is a discontinued Simplicity brand called Build by Wendy.  Her patterns were one of the first patterns that I ever worked with.  I have the whole collection and this summer I was going back and remaking a lot of her patterns.   I made this jacket from her 4109 pattern, which several variations to the design.  I made mine with a standing collar, and I decided to leave out the buttons and make it into a throw over coat.  I also took in the size a little bit to make it slightly better form fitting.

I also made the shirt that I'm wearing.  It's just a basic button down made from my leftover prom dress fabric.  I love the texture of this fabric - you may not be able to tell through the photos, but the gold dots are slightly raised giving a really fun texture!

  1. Lovely, as per usual. Question for you: how do you get the focus to work well on your self-portraits? That's something I've never managed to crack...

  2. Love the jacket - and your styling, as always, is wonderful. The mural makes an intriguing backdrop. Did your mom paint it?

    1. Thank you Charade! I know, isn't it a great mural?! No, my mom didn't paint this, but she has painted murals in the past! This is one on an outside wall in a near my hometown in Indiana.

  3. That jacket is gorgeous! Loving this outfit! :D
I've only ever made really bad sweatpants and an ugly dress, haha. My mom is the one who is good at sewing.

    1. Thank you so much for your sweet words about my jacket! Haha well, I think everyone has those beginning sewing pieces. Mine were not so pretty either! I wouldn't feel too discouraged from sewing :)

  6. The jacket is awesome, nice work! Definitely an everyday fall piece. Also envious that you can carry off that floppy hat so well!
It's such a bummer the Built by Wendy patterns were discontinued, mainly because I only have a couple. :( She has such a wonderful sense of design!

    1. Thank you Emily! Exactly what I was thinking, fall is a great season for jackets :) And I agree, it was a complete bummer! Usually you can still find them on ebay though, which is great!

  8. Both beautiful pieces! I love the flipped out notched collar on your jacket. And it goes so well stylistically with that gorgeous top too. It's so hard to tailor with a fine chiffon like that. Your work is exceptional :)

  9. Beautiful jacket. Absolutely perfect for fall - although I'm not sure how much 'fall' Savannah gets, I've only been there in spring. I think the hat is the perfect color to wear with it, too - there's very much a Diane Keaton + 70's thing happening here and I love it.

    1. Thanks Katie!! Yes, Savannah doesn't get a fall at all. We get a little bit of a spring, but that's only in the "winter" months. Usually it's a mix between summer and spring. haha. That's why I'm going to be selling this jacket in my etsy shop later on :)

And goodness, thank you for the Diane Keaton compliment! I'm obsessed with Annie Hall so that means a lot!
